Rethink Your Relationship to Time
My hot take: Time is an illusion.
We live by calendars and clocks, by schedules and deadlines, by the linear progression of past, present, and future. But if you've ever experienced a moment of pure flow—where hours disappear like minutes or where an instant feels like eternity—you know that time is not as fixed as we make it out to be.
The only reality that matters is your relationship to time. Not the external world. Not what society demands of you. Not the expectations placed upon you by systems built for efficiency rather than alignment.
Each of us has a unique rhythm, a way of engaging with time that feels natural and effortless when honored. Some people move in bursts of energy, followed by periods of rest. Others thrive when they respond to the world around them, waiting for the right cues before taking action. Some are most effective when guiding others, seeing patterns and timing that others might miss. And then there are those who are deeply attuned to the ebb and flow of life, needing space and patience to fully process decisions.
A Tale of Two Weeks
Several years ago, early in my journey of learning how to live in alignment with myself, I had a staycation planned—an entire week off work with a carefully crafted to-do list broken down by the day. I had big plans: clean the house, catch up on reading, finish a project, organize files, even try a few new recipes. Every hour was accounted for.
But on the eve of that staycation, I looked at my list and felt an overwhelming sense of dread. It was supposed to be a restorative week, and yet it already felt like another job. So I made a choice: to let it all go.
Instead of being beholden to my list, I decided to navigate each day by listening to the subtle nudges of my intuition—what I had energy for in the moment. No overthinking, just trusting the quiet yes or no I felt in my body. I checked in with myself moment to moment—What do I want to eat? What do I feel like watching or reading? Is it time for rest or movement? When does it feel right to go to bed?
By the end of the week, something remarkable had happened. I had accomplished more than what was on my original list—many of the tasks still got done, but so did things I hadn’t planned for. And the best part? My week off felt like a month. Spacious. Grounded. Nourishing. It was the first time I truly experienced the illusion of time: when I flowed with my energy, time expanded.
Now, contrast that with what would have happened if I’d forced myself to stick to the plan:
I would have woken up each morning dreading the day.
Even if I checked everything off, I’d feel depleted, not accomplished.
Rest would’ve been tinged with guilt, productivity with pressure.
The week would’ve flown by—and I’d probably feel like I needed another one just to recover.
That single experiment shifted everything. It showed me that when I trust myself and my timing, I don’t fall behind—I actually align with time and ENJOY myself.
Your Personal Rhythm
How you move through time affects everything—your energy, your effectiveness, and your sense of fulfillment. Recognizing your natural rhythm allows you to stop fighting against time and instead align with its flow.
Creators and Initiators operate best when they honor their internal timing, allowing their instincts to dictate when to act and when to rest.
Builders and Doers thrive when they engage in work that energizes them, responding to what naturally calls them rather than forcing things into existence.
Guides and Advisors are at their best when they are recognized and invited to contribute their insights, rather than pushing to be heard.
Observers and Reflectors require time and space to see things clearly, benefiting from patience in their decision-making process.
Friction with time arises when we try to fit into a rhythm that isn’t ours—when we push instead of wait, force instead of flow, or rush instead of reflect. The key is alignment, not effort.
Moving with Time Instead of Against It
The way you engage with time should be intentional. Some people are meant to act decisively in the moment, trusting their instincts. Others need time to process before making choices. Some people are designed to trust the physical response of their body, while others must listen to their deeper desires and motivations. Each approach to timing has its own wisdom, and learning to trust it creates a sense of ease.
The Most Important Reality
In the end, the world around you will continue to spin on the illusion of time. But your experience of it? That is yours to shape.
Are you resisting time, forcing it to fit expectations? Or are you allowing it to work with you, through your unique rhythm?
When you stop chasing time and start aligning with it, life unfolds effortlessly. The "perfect timing" isn’t something you create—it’s something you step into when you trust your own way of moving through the world.
Time isn’t real. But your relationship to it is everything.
